India's coal production increased to 92.87 million tonnes in December 2023, marking a year-on-year jump of 10.75% from last year's figure of 83.86 million tonnes, data from the ministry of coal showed.
The increase is part of a broader rise in production and dispatches in the sector.
State-run Coal India Ltd. contributed a lot to the growth. CIL's coal output reached 71.86 million tonnes in the month, up 8.27% from 66.37 million tonnes in the same month of 2022.
The company's total coal production added to 684.31 million tonnes during the ongoing fiscal year (April-December 2023), jumping 12.47% from 608.34 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
India's coal dispatch in December also obtained substantial gains to 86.23 million tonnes, up 8.36% from 79.58 million tonnes a year ago. CIL's dispatch was reported at 66.1 million tonnes, rising 5.49%.
In total, coal dispatch for the fiscal year 2023-24 up to December has touched 709.8 million tonnes, rising 11.36% from 637.4 million tonnes.
The ministry attributed the great performance to the efficient operations of Coal Public Sector Undertakings.
Such growth, marked by increases in production, dispatch and stock levels, demonstrated the sector's commitment to ensuring a steady supply of coal nationwide.
