Indonesia's coal production reached a record high of 766.95 million tonnes in 2023, far surpassing the government's target, according to official data.
Output for the full year was 110.43% of the target (694.5 million tonnes) set by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, according to figures from the ministry's Minerba One Map Indonesia on January 8.
Domestic market obligations were met with supplies of 336.55 million tonnes while exports totaled 396.54 million tonnes.
The record production topped 2022's output of 671.75 million tonnes, which was 101.32% of the target of 663 million tonnes.
According to data issued by BP Statistical Review 2022, Indonesia's coal production has geared up since 2002, when its annual production exceeded 100 million tonnes for the first time. Its production increased to 216.9 million in 2007, and further to 353.3 million in 2011.
In 2013, the country's coal production topped 400 million tonnes and continued to rise until 2019, when the production renewed the record at 616.2 million tonnes. Then, the outbreak of Covid-19 suppressed coal production, causing the annual production to fall to 563.7 million tonnes in 2020. In 2021, the production rebound to 614 million tonnes.
The robust performance in 2023 boosted government income with non-tax state revenue reaching 152.16 trillion rupiah ($9.8 billion), exceeding the target by 178%.
"With higher output, the economy and society as well as employment will certainly improve, and state revenues are expected to exceed our target," said Secretary General of the ESDM, Dadan Kusdiana.
Indonesia is the world's biggest thermal coal exporter, supplying countries like China, India, Japan and South Korea.
Indonesia exported 512 million tonnes of coal in the full year of 2023, up 11.73% from 2022, Kpler data showed.
