Indonesian state-backed coal miner PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) has initiated the construction of train loading stations to bolster its coal transport efficiency and capabilities through the Tanjung Enim-Keramasan rail line, media reported.
This aligns with the coal mining company's long-term strategy to increase coal production.
PTBA plans to build two loading stations with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per hour each. These stations will be connected to two conveyor-system lines spanning 13 km and 17 km, respectively. The conveyor system will link to three dump hoppers, accommodating dump trucks ranging from 60-100 tonnes in capacity, the company said.
The construction of these loading stations is part of a joint venture project between PTBA and state-run railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to develop the Tanjung Enim-Keramasan railway. KAI is responsible for constructing the Kramasan coal unloading station with a 60,000 tonnes each day capacity at the other end of the rail line.
The line is projected to boast an initial capacity of 20 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with provisions for doubling it to 40 Mtpa if required.
The enhanced coal evacuation by the railway line will contribute to PTBA's overall output expansion.
The company expected coal demand in the power sector to persist until sufficient renewables capacity is installed to offset the planned decommissioning of coal plants in the coming decades.
