German coal importers have successfully diversified their sources, finding more supply from the U.S. and Australia as alternatives to their previous reliance on Russian coal, Reuters reported on January 17, citing industry body VDKi.
Over January-October 2023, Russian coal accounted for only 2% of all imported volume by Germany, down dramatically from 53% in 2021, showed data from VDKi.
However, the U.S. coal represented 28% of the total coal inflows in Germany during the same period, followed by 27% from Australia and 15% from Colombia.
Smaller shares were provided by Canada, Poland, and South Africa, but VDKi highlighted the increased activity of South Africa in recent times.
Germany's hard coal imports for the whole of 2023 may have declined by 26.3% year on year to approximately 33.0 million tonnes, according to a preliminary estimates from VDKi.
