Indonesia produced 775 million tonnes of coal in 2023, well above the 695 million tonnes of the set target, rising 12.8% from 687 million tonnes in 2022, said the country's Mining Minister Arifin Tasrif.
Around 518 million tonnes of Indonesian coal were exported last year, an increase of 11% from a year earlier.
The increase in exports was due to higher global demand for coal and disruption in supplies of other energy commodities. Domestic coal demand also surpassed expectations after a number of coal-fired utilities came online, Arifin said.
In 2024, Indonesia aims 710 million tonnes of coal production.
