Australian miner BHP's thermal coal output amounted to 7.5 million tonnes in the first half of the fiscal year 2023-24 (July-December 2023) in New South Wales (NSW), up 36% year on year, according to a statement released by the group.
During the given period, the thermal coal business enjoyed the strongest operating performance in recent five years and production increased, thanks to eased labor constraints and improved weather conditions.
Thermal coal exports by BHP reached 7.56 million tonnes from July to December, 42.6% higher from a year earlier.
Over October-December last year, the group produced 3.9 million tonnes of the fuel, rising 35% on the year and 7% quarter on quarter, while the export increased 48.6% from the year before and 28.4% on the quarter to 4.25 million tonnes, data showed.
The average coal price of the group reached $123.29/t in July-December 2023, far lower than $157.21/t in January-June 2023 and $354.3/t in the same period of 2022.
BHP's actual thermal coal output is expected to be at the top of its guidance of 13-15 million tonnes for FY2023-24.
