China Energy Investment Group (CHN Energy), China's largest coal miner, sold a total 830 million tonnes of coal in 2023, hitting a historic high, while power generation surpassed 1,200 TWh for the first time, according to the group.
This underscored the group's crucial role in ensuring stable energy supply and stabilizing prices.
Since October 2021, CHN Energy has managed to maintain a monthly coal production of 50 million tonnes for 27 consecutive months.
Meanwhile, the group led the way in inking long-term thermal coal contracts, with signing and fulfillment rates for self-produced coal sales both exceeding 100%.
During the frigid period when thermal coal consumption accelerates with surging heating demand, CHN Energy adjusted down the average selling prices of self-produced coal by 6 yuan/t year on year in December 2023, ensuring overall price stability nationwide.
CHN Energy expanded coal transportation channels. In 2023, the core area of integrated transportation completed 498 million tonnes of rail coal shipments, and the group shipped 270 million tonnes of coal via northern China ports. Huanghua port maintained a coal shipping volume of above 200 million tonnes for four consecutive years.
In terms of power generation, all 14 newly built thermal power units successfully passed 168 hours of continuous operation in 2023, with 9.5 GW of newly commissioned capacity, setting a new historical high.
The group's total installed capacity exceeded 300 GW, with 26.16 GW of new energy capacity added throughout the year. Installed renewables capacity surpassed 100 GW of and wind power over 60 GW.
The group saw its annual power generation surpass 1,000 TWh 18 days ahead of the previous year through deepening three modifications (energy-saving & carbon reduction, heating and flexibility modification). Thermal power broke through the 1,000-TWh mark for the first time and the share of new energy generation increased 1.6 percentage points to 13.8%, effectively guaranteeing power demand.
The group aims to ensure that renewable energy accounts for over 50% of installed capacity by 2030.
