Eastern China's Shandong province had 88 mines in construction or operation, with a total production capacity of 123.61 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), according to an announcement by the provincial energy administration.
Two mines were still under construction with a combined capacity of 2.25 Mtpa. The remaining 86 operational mines had a total permitted capacity of 121.36 Mtpa.
Of the operating mines, 40 mines were owned by Shandong Energy Group, the province's dominant coal producer. One mine was not included in the announcement, while the remaining mines held a total capacity of 90.67 Mtpa.
By end-June 2023, the province held 124.51 Mtpa of coal capacity, with 122.26 Mtpa in operation and 2.25 Mtpa in construction.
In January-November 2023, Shandong's coal production totaled 79.47 million tonnes, accounting for nearly 2% of China's total.
