Iberdrola Mexico's Topolobampo III power plant successfully started the commercial operation on January 3. The plant located in Sinaloa of Mexico, near the Topolobampo natural gas pipeline, the company said.
Topolobampo III power plant was powered by GE's H-class combined cycle equipment including the first 7HA.01 gas turbines ordered in Mexico, helping lower emissions and meet fluctuating power demand.
The plant aimed to promote the further growth in Mexico's renewable energy and grid with high efficiency and advanced digital capabilities. It is designed to help tackle the surging energy demand of Mexico's population, which is forecast to exceed 150 million by 2050, according to International Energy Agency.
The power generation capacity of the plant is up to 766 megawatts (MW), which could cover the power demand of more than 1.6 million average Mexican households.
The Mexican government planned to double the current renewable energy capacity by 2030, driving up solar and wind capacity from 15 GW to 40 GW.
