Coalbed methane (CBM) output in Shanxi province, a major coal and energy hub in northern China, hit a new record in November, according to data from the Shanxi Statistics Bureau on January 1.
The province produced 1.03 bcm of CBM in November, accounting for 81.1% of China's total, the official statistics showed.
CBM, also known as coal seam gas, naturally occurs within coal deposits. Shanxi has abundant CBM resources with proven geological reserves of around 760.4 bcm as of end-2022.
At Qinshui basin in southern Shanxi, CBM is extracted from coal seams and piped to homes and businesses around the clock. With heating needs spiking in winter, higher CBM yields will help guarantee energy availability across the province during the peak demand season.
Shanxi's total CBM output reached 10.14 bcm in the first 11 months of 2023, exceeding full-year production of 9.61 bcm in 2022, setting a new high for the same period in history.
