Coal imports through India's 12 state-run ports totaled 16.66 Mt in Dec, up 3.49% YoY yet down 8.14% MoM. Thermal coal and coking coal imports stood at 10.16 Mt and 6.49 Mt respectively, showed the latest data from Indian Ports Association.
The top five destinations for South African coal in Nov were India, Mozambique, Italy, Vietnam and Germany, with combined shipments accounting for 73.55% of the total, lower than 76.4% MoM. The country's coal deliveries to the top ten buyers took 88.28 % of the total, lower than 90% in Oct. Among the top 10, three was European countries.

In exchange, the Japanese firm gave up its prior 2.5% stake in one of Teck's coal operations and has paid $1.7 billion in cash. POSCO traded its interests in two of Teck's coal operations for a 3% stake in the overall coking coal business. The transactions are part of a deal with Glencore in November 2023, which will see the Swiss miner and commodities trader pay $6.9 billion for 77% of Elk Valley Resources.
Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower Inc., a listed enterprise owned by China Huaneng Group, generated 107.06 TWh of electricity in 2023, down 4.04% YoY, while grid-connected power stood at 106.24 TWh, falling 4.05% YoY, the company said in a statement.
