Coal imports through India's 12 state-run ports dropped significantly in December from the multi-year high in the previous month, but were still higher than the same period last year, official data showed.
The 12 ports imported a total of 16.66 million tonnes of coal in December, up 3.49% year on year (YoY) yet down 8.14% month on month (MoM), showed the latest data from Indian Ports Association.
Thermal coal imports at these ports stood at 10.16 million tonnes, down 2.62% YoY and 12.1% MoM, while coking coal imports reached 6.49 million tonnes, rising 14.75% YoY yet declining 1.16% MoM, data showed.
Paradip port in East India received most thermal coal among all these ports in December, at 3.86 million tonnes, decreasing 9.25% YoY and 7.4% MoM.
Kolkata, also along the east coast, imported most coking coal in the same month at 2.84 million tonnes, rising 12.36% YoY and 6.14% MoM.
Imports at these ports totaled 144 million tonnes during the first nine months of the fiscal year 2023-24 (April-December), down 2.13% from 140 million tonnes last year. Thermal coal imports stood at 94.85 million tonnes, down 2.68% YoY, and coking coal imports at 48.83 million tonnes, up 12.97% YoY.
The total coal handling volume at the 12 ports reached 605 million tonnes during the same period, up 4.93% from 577 million tonnes a year ago.
India's 12 state-owned ports are Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), and Kandla.
