The US's coal output over the week ending December 30 was estimated at 8.63 million short tons (7.83 million tonnes), down 23.77% week on week and 1.01% year on year, the lowest level since the start of 2021, showed data from the Energy Information Administration on January 4.
Coal production in Wyoming and Montana combined was estimated at 3.89 million short tons, down 25% from a week ago and 4.39% from the previous year.
Illinois's coal output was estimated at 555,700 short tons, 21.48% lower than the week-ago level but up 10.72% on the year, while Appalachian coal production was estimated at 2.53 million short tons, diving 22.1% from the week prior yet rising 10.18% from a year ago.
During the 52 weeks of 2023, US coal output totaled 580 million short tons, a 2.1% fall from 593 million short tons in 2022, data showed.
U.S. rail coal shipments were 52,158 rail wagons, decreasing 14,572 from a week earlier but up 1,894 from the preceding year. The year-to-date rail coal shipments totaled 3.42 million wagons, flat year on year.
