Renewables capacity in central China's Henan province surpassed 67 GW by the end of 2023, exceeding coal-fired power capacity for the first time in history, Xinhua News Agency reported, citing the latest data from the State Grid Henan Electric Power Co., Ltd.

The province's installed renewable energy power generation capacity accounted for 48.7% of the total, while coal-fired power at 47.4% or 66.01 GW, data showed.

Henan generated nearly 100 TWh of electricity from renewables in 2023, rising 21% year on year and representing about 1/4 of the province's total power consumption.

As a major energy producer and consumer with coal as its dominated source for a long time, Henan has been promoting renewables by boosting wind, solar and biomass energy.
