South Africa has awarded the contract for the establishment and operation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at the Port of Richards Bay to a Vopak consortium, the state-run Transnet National Ports Authority said on January 10.
The move aligns with the country's strategic initiative to bolster gas consumption and is part of the nation's broader efforts to address its unprecedented energy crisis and reduce dependence on coal-fired plants.
TNPA said this gas infrastructure will be the first of its kind in South Africa and expected the terminal to start operation in 2027.
Vopak is a Dutch company with a global presence in terminal operations and storage facilities.
