China imported 34.26 million tonnes of thermal coal (including non-coking bituminous coal, sub-bituminous coal and lignite) in December, rising 46.35% year on year and 7.35% month on month, customs data showed.
It still marked the highest monthly import volume in history.
The imports were valued at $2.96 billion, up 8.62% year on year and 8.57% month on month. The average import price was calculated at $86.26/t, falling 25.78% year on year but rising 1.14% month on month.
Total thermal coal imports reached 354 million tonnes in 2023, soaring 61.91% or 135 million tonnes year on year, with value up 29.3% to $32.47 billion.
Lignite imports in December increased 17.85% on the year and 10.55% from November to 15.63 million tonnes. Value of the imports amounted to $1.02 billion, down 15.9% year on year but up 12.12% month on month. The average lignite import price was calculated at $65.3/t in the month, down 28.64% year on year yet up 1.42% month on month.
Lignite imports last year totaled 163 million tonnes, up 25.02% or 32.65 million tonnes on the year; the value of the imports declined 6.04% year on year to $11.56 billion.
