Coal production in Russia's key producing area of Kuzbass declined 2.9% or 5.9 million tonnes from a year ago to 195.9 million tonnes during January-November of 2023, according to the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass.
Coal produced from opencast mines stood at 131.1 million tonnes, down 4.2% or 5.8 million tonnes year on year, while that from underground mines dipped 0.2% or 0.1 million tonnes on the year to 64.8 million tonnes.
Production of coking coal reached 62.1 million tonnes, an increase of 2.5% or 1.5 million tonnes year on year. Thermal coal extraction volumes decreased 5.2% or 7.4 million tonnes on the year to 133.8 million tonnes.
During January-November, a total of 159.1 million tonnes of coal were delivered to end-users, down 3.3% or 5.4 million tonnes year on year.
Specifically, 103.5 million tonnes were exported, a year-on-year drop of 5.3% or 5.8 million tonnes. Russian metallurgical companies received 30.3 million tonnes of coal, up 3.8% or 1.1 million tonnes year on year, while coal shipments to local coal-fired power plants amounted to 15.8 million tonnes, down 1.9% or 0.3 million tonnes.
As of December 1, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 21.7 million tonnes, 8.5% or 1.7 million tonnes higher than the corresponding period last year amid international sanctions against Russia and logistical issues.
