Indonesia's coal production is expected to reach a record high of 775.17 million tonnes in 2023, an 11.6% rise from targeted 694.5 million tonnes, a senior official from the energy ministry said on December 15.
Lana Saria, director of coal business development at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said coal output until the end of November had reached 710.75 million tonnes, while assuming average monthly production of 64.6 million tonnes for the remaining month of the year.
"We are targeting production to reach 775.17 million tonnes by the end of the year. This is 111% of our target for this year," Lana told a conference.
She attributed the higher output to rising post-pandemic energy demand globally.
"Although prices have been falling, they have not dropped too sharply. Economic growth in Indonesia and worldwide has increased after COVID-19, requiring more energy," Lana said.
The higher production has boosted royalties for the coal sector, with revenues reaching 94.59 trillion rupiah ($6.1 billion) as of December 11, exceeding the 2023 state budget target of 84.27 trillion rupiah, she added.
