DTEK Energy, the largest commercial energy operator in Ukraine, concluded a contract of additional 80,000 tonnes of thermal coal from Poland, bringing the total volume of imports to 357,000 tonnes, Ukrainian News Agency reported on January 16.
Poland had delivered nearly 182,000 tonnes of coal to Ukraine, accounting for 49.02% of the total contracted coal import volume.
Ildar Salieiev, CEO of the company said that imported coal was an extra safety buffer for thermal power generation in winter. The company still took mining in domestic coal mines as priority, with a total investment in local mines at around UAH 7 billion ($184 million), which brought 26 new coal mines into operation. It not only helped the company complete the annual coal mining plan, but also provided sufficient fuel for coal-fired power plants.
The company had increased the amount of contracted thermal coal from Poland by 70,000 tonnes to 280,000 tonnes in November 2023, according to an earlier report.
