U.S. coal output over the week ending January 6 was estimated at 10.27 million short tons (9.31 million tonnes), up 18.93% week on week yet down 8.68% year on year, showed data from the Energy Information Administration on January 11.
Coal production in Wyoming and Montana combined was estimated at 4.61 million short tons, up 18.72% from a week ago yet down 10.5% from the previous year.
Illinois's coal output was estimated at 673,900 short tons, 21.28% higher than the week-ago level yet down 2.63% on the year, while Appalachian coal production was estimated at 3.08 million short tons, rising 21.72% from the week prior and 2.33% from a year ago.
Since the first week of 2024, U.S. coal output totaled 9.01 million short tons, a 6.4% fall from 9.62 million short tons in the same period last year, data showed.
U.S. rail coal shipments were 61,747 rail wagons over the week, increasing 9,589 from a week earlier but decreasing 2,181 from the preceding year. The year-to-date rail coal shipments totaled 541.38 million wagons, down 2.7% year on year.
