Coal exports from three major North Queensland terminals were 11.29 million tonnes in December, declining 5.19% on the year and 2.42% on the month, showed data from North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation.
The ports exported a total of 133 million tonnes of coal in January-December, up 3.13% from a year earlier.
North Queensland mainly exports coal through Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay and Abbot Point coal terminals.
In December, exports from Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, which has a handling capacity of 85 million tonnes per year, reached 5.20 million tonnes, down 4.14% year on year and 3.26% month on month. The combined volume from January to December rose 12.19% year on year to 59.20 million tonnes.
Exports from Abbot Point coal terminal were recorded at 3.12 million tonnes in December, increasing 27.08% from the year-ago level and 4.03% from November.
Abbot Point is the most northerly and has the lowest handling capacity of 50 million tonnes per year among the three terminals. The total exports in January-December increased 11.59% on the year to 34.66 million tonnes.
The export volume of Hay Point coal terminal, operated by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, stood at 2.97 million tonnes in December, decreasing 26.28% on the year and 7.05% on the month. The combined volume from January to December was 38.99 million tonnes, down 13.34% on the year. Hay Point has a handling capacity of 55 million tonnes per year.
The vast majority of North Queensland's exports are coking coal.
