Coal imports in China's Taiwan for 2023 fell below 60 million tonnes for the first time since 2009 and recorded the lowest yearly level since 2004, preliminary customs data showed.
From January to December last year, Taiwan's coal imports amounted to 58.95 million tonnes, down 6.91% from 2022's 63.32 million tonnes, while the total import value was $11.92 billion, down 25.61% year on year, data showed.
Taiwan imported 4.43 million tonnes of coal in December, rising 3.86% year on year (YoY) and 14.13% month on month (MoM).
The import value of coal in December was $782 million, down 32.71% from a year ago but up 23.16% from November. The average import price was calculated at $176.45/t, down 35.21% year on year yet up 7.92% month on month, data showed.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in December, with shipments at 2.26 million tonnes (-7.14% YoY, +23.87% MoM), followed by Indonesia at 1.27 million tonnes (+11.84% YoY, +5.59% MoM) and Russia at 673,300 tonnes (+28.32% YoY, +47.7% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal in December, totaling 3.35 million tonnes, down 10.78% YoY but up 6.36% MoM; imports of other coal reached 1.07 million tonnes, surging 109.67% YoY and up 46.38% MoM.
In December, Taiwan imported 3,700 tonnes of coke, plunging 72.6% YoY and 74.55% MoM, with the import value at $1.15 million, slumping 79.71% YoY and 76.21% MoM.
Total coke imports in January-December declined 29.33% year on year to 147,700 tonnes, with the value down 50.51% YoY to $51.64 million.
Taiwan also imported 1.86 million tonnes of LNG in December, up 18.52% YoY and 12.04% MoM, sending the total LNG import throughout the year of 2023 to 20.47 million tonnes, a 2.59% YoY rise.
