• RBCT conveyor belt repair removes 400 coal trucks from roads

    sxcoal.com Ports,  International 2024-01-11 14:42:55

One of three conveyor belts damaged in October 2021 fires at the Richards Bay Bulk Terminal (RBCT) has returned to full operations and will prioritize the handling of coal exports.

The conveyor belt, able to deliver 3 million tonnes of coal per year, will facilitate more than 400 coal trucks being removed from the road.

With the surge in demand for coal in Europe and Asia, exporters have gradually turned to trucking capacity to ship coal from mines to ports to avoid unsmooth deliveries by railway capacity, resulting in severe congestion at RBCT.

The rebuild program had been rolling out over the past two years, said the managing executive Thulasizwe Dlamini of RBCT.

Dlamini noted that the terminal was working on returning the remaining two conveyor belts to operations in July.
