The National Coal Index (NCI), which aggregates coal prices in India from diverse sales channels, recorded a decline of 17.54% in November 2023, down to 155.09 points from 188.08 points in the corresponding month of 2022, the Ministry of Coal said in a statement.
The decline indicated sufficient coal supply in India, which managed to meet the growing demand.
The NCI for non-coking coal in November 2023 saw a substantial drop to 143.52 points, marking a 25.07% decline year on year. Yet the coking coal index rose 5.79% to 188.39 points.
This downtrend for non-coking coal aligns with increased coal availability in the market, as reflected by the decline in coal auctions premiums.
