Kazakhstan Railways or Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), shipped about 46.2 million tonnes of coal within the country from May 1 to December 21 this year, foreign media reported on December 30.
That was 0.4 million tonnes or 0.87% higher than the same period last year, data showed.
KTZ, a joint stock company founded by the government, shouldered the task to develop and maintain railway transportation in Kazakhstan.
About 40.1 million tonnes of coal were delivered to the thermal power plants for heating in Kazakhstan, increasing 0.91 million tonnes or 2.32% from a year earlier.
Coal stocks at 28 out of 29 thermal power plants were above normal levels. Their total coal stocks stood at 5.4 million tonnes, 31% higher compared with the preceding year.
Meanwhile, 6.1 million tonnes of coal were shipped for the residential use.
In addition, the company planned to transport 848,400 tonnes of coal in December for the coal use of residents and coal-fired power plants, of which only 235,000 tonnes or 27.7% were loaded as of December 11 via 20,000 open wagons, due to inactive applications from coal operators owing to high availability of stocks in warehouses.
