Japan imported 13.64 million tonnes of coal in November, a 7.6% decrease year on year, showed the preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance.
The import value was 413.29 billion yen ($2.89 billion), falling 48% from a year ago, data showed.
Imports from the U.S. picked up by 0.6% from a year ago to 0.93 million tonnes, with the value down 13.1% to 34.82 billion yen. Russian coal receipts declined 67.1% compared with the previous year to 195,000 tonnes, which was worth 5.84 billion yen, a notable 82.4% decrease.
In November, Japan imported 8.31 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 2.4% on the year, with import value at 222.68 billion yen, tumbling 55.6% year on year.
Thermal coal intakes from the U.S. were 191,000 tonnes, up 17% from a year earlier; value fell 42.7% on the year to 6.14 billion yen. The country imported 167,000 tonnes of thermal coal from Russia, 64.6% lower than the same month last year, with the value down 83.2% to 4.67 billion yen.
Japan imported 5.33 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas during the month, down 3.9% from the preceding year; value fell 34.1% on the year to 493.82 billion yen.
