India's coal giant Coal India Ltd. reported a substantial 12.15% increase in coking coal production for the April-November this year, to 35.97 million tonnes, thanks to a significant boost and marking a notable achievement in its operational capabilities.
The surge in production is timely to quench the thirst since the global demand for steel continues to rise, with coking coal being a critical ingredient in steel manufacturing.
CIL's washed coking coal production also increased substantially by 8.11% to 1.41 million tonnes, it said.
Coking coal washery feeds jumped by 18.04% to 4.31 million tonnes.
The increase is part of CIL's strategy to improve the quality of coal, which involves the removal of ash and other impurities to produce a higher grade of coking coal that is preferred by steelmakers.
The CIL has ramped up supplies of both washed and raw coking coal to the steel sector to 2.15 million tonnes so far.
The move is expected to reinforce the country's steel industry and reduced its reliance on imported coking coal, and stabilize prices in the volatile global market.
