Russian coal exports to China could reach 100-102 million tonnes in 2023, roughly a 50% increase compared with the year-ago level, Pyotr Bobylev, department director of Russian Energy Ministry, said on November 20.
Russia exported 76.5 million tonnes of coal to China over January to September in 2023, already exceeding 67 million tonnes by the end of 2022, he added.
Besides, Russia and China are working on an intergovernmental agreement to secure 100 million tonnes in annual coal supplies, the official said.
India is also a key destination of Russian coal exports, with the total shipments at 21.3 million tonnes during the first nine months, compared with 20 million tonnes in the whole year of 2022.
Exports to the BRICS countries continued to have stable growth dynamics, he noted, adding the volume surged by 2.5 times over the last five to six years.
Coal exports to BRICS countries account for 40% of Russian total coal outflows.
