Coal imports through India's 12 state-run ports edged up 0.96% from the previous month to 16.82 million tonnes, which were still 7.79% higher than the same period last year, showed the latest data from Indian Ports Association.
Thermal coal imports at these ports stood at 11.10 million tonnes, up 12.08% year on year (YoY) and 9.25% month on month (MoM), while coking coal imports reached 5.72 million tonnes, ticking up 0.33% YoY yet declining 12.01% MoM, data showed.
Paradip port in East India received most thermal coal among all these ports in January, at 4.87 million tonnes, increasing 21.71% YoY and 26.23% MoM.
Kolkata, also along the east coast, imported most coking coal in the same month at 2.18 million tonnes, falling 15.25% YoY and 23.19% MoM.
Imports at these ports totaled 160 million tonnes during the first ten months of the fiscal year 2023-24 (April 2023-Jan 2024), up 2.65% from 156 million tonnes last year. Thermal coal imports stood at 106 million tonnes, down 1.37% YoY, and coking coal imports at 54.56 million tonnes, up 11.47% YoY.
The total coal handling volume at the 12 ports reached 678 million tonnes during the same period, up 4.75% from 647 million tonnes a year ago.
India's 12 state-owned ports are Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), and Kandla.
