Coal exports at the Hampton Roads terminals in the state of Virginia of the U.S. hit a five-year high in 2023, with the total volume amounting to 35.50 million short tons (32.21 million tonnes), rising 12% year on year, according to the Virginia Maritime Association estimates.
The export volume in December reached 3.30 million short tons, up 38% from the preceding year and 2% from November, data showed.
In December, the Dominion Terminal Association (DTA) terminal in Newport News shipped 1.30 million short tons of coal, down 3% from November but growing 38% from the year prior. The terminal totally exported 14.30 million short tons of coal in 2023, increasing 14% on the year.
Coal exports through Lamberts Point terminal, operated by Norfolk Southern, stood at 1.50 million short tons over the month, rising 37% on the month and 66% on the year, and mainly for metallurgical coal. In the full year of 2023, the terminal's coal exports increased 16% from the previous year to 13.30 million short tons.
Coal exports through Pier IX, operated by energy giant Kinder Morgan, were 510,500 short tons in the same month, up 7% from a year ago yet down 35% from November, and mostly for thermal coal. Coal outflows in 2023 edged up 2% to 79,000 short tons, data showed.
