The Indian government is working to boost domestic coal production and eliminate imports of all substitutable grades of the fuel, according to the country's coal minister Pralhad Joshi, as the government looks to cut reliance on overseas shipments.
Joshi highlighted a significant 44.3% year-on-year drop in coal imports for blending during April-November of FY24. At the same time, the majority of the country's coal demand is being fulfilled through indigenous supply.
During April-November, India imported 169.08 million tonnes of coal. The full-year imports were 237.67 million, 208.63 million, and 215.25 million tonnes in FY23, FY22 and FY21, respectively.
The country's coal production in the April-January period rose to 784.11 million tonnes, higher than 698.99 million tonnes during the same period in FY23, the coal ministry said.
