Vietnam's coal output fell for the fifth straight month in August, while year-on-year growth still stood above 5%, according to the latest data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).
The southeastern Asian country produced 3.92 million tonnes of coal in August, a 5.25% uptick from 3.73 million tonnes a year ago but a 0.9% decline compared to 3.96 million tonnes in July, the data showed.
From January to August this year, Vietnam's cumulative production amounted to 32.9 million tonnes, 3.39% lower than 34.05 million tonnes last year.
The country's coal production is expected at 3.7 million tonnes in September, rising 2.54% on the year but dropping 5.67% month on month. This added to the total production to 36.59 million tonnes in the first nine months, down 2.82% from a year earlier.
The majority of domestically produced coal in Vietnam is used for local electricity generation, cement production, and other industrial purposes.
