Indonesia's coal exports dropped for the second straight month to below 40 million tonnes in September, showed cargo-tracking data from Kpler. Coal shipment to China hit a new low in over two years.
The country exported 39.95 million tonnes of coal in September, falling 12.83% from 45.84 million tonnes a year ago and down 3.77% from 41.52 million tonnes in August, Kpler's data showed.
In the first nine months of 2023, Indonesia exported 371 million tonnes of coal, up 11.38% on the year.
Indonesia exported 38.4 million tonnes of coal to Asian countries in September, falling 13.55% from the previous year and 6.53% from a month ago, and accounting for 95.7% of total exports.
China remained the top destination for Indonesian coal in September with the shipment at 14.33 million tonnes, dropping 35.97% from a year earlier and 23.73% from August.
September exports to India jumped 48.37% year on year and 37.98% month on month to 10.57 million tonnes. Exports to the Philippines declined 4.99% from a year ago and 6.61% from the month prior to 2.52 million tonnes.
During the month, exports to South Korea fell 11.49% from a year earlier but rose 15.55% from August to 2.21 million tonnes. Shipments to Malaysia rose 16.5% from a year ago but fell 25.21% from August to 2.01 million tonnes.
