The China Coal Guangyuan Coal-fired Power project in southwestern China's Sichuan province has gained approval from the local provincial economic planner, marking the first coal-fired power project within the province since 2016, the start of the 13th Five-Year Plan period.
Sichuan was China's No. 1 hydropower producer, with output presenting 30.6% of the country's total.
While hydropower accounts for around 75-80% of the province's total power generation, its strong reliance on precipitation and water storage has made it comparatively vulnerable at the time of drought season.
In this case, the construction of the coal-fired power project could help the province tide over the drought period and further enhance the power supply.
As a profound collaboration between Guangyuan city and China National Coal Group and also the company's strategic foray into the southwestern region, the project plans to construct two 1-GW high-efficiency ultra-supercritical coal-fired generating units, accompanied by the simultaneous construction of flue gas desulfurization and denitrification facilities, according to the local economic planner.
The total investment is estimated at 7.3 billion yuan. Once completed, it is projected to generate 8 TWh of electricity annually.
