Australia's coal exports surpassed A$8 billion in December 2023, rising for the fourth consecutive month, although the figure remained below the year-ago level, official data showed.
Exports in December totaled A$8.23 billion ($5.40 billion), up 4.97% from the previous month but down 33.66% on the year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said.
Coal exports to top buyer Japan came in at A$2.59 billion in December, ticking up 1.54% from the preceding month yet down 53.78% year on year. Japan represented 32% of Australia's total exports that month. Shipments to India amounted to A$1.31 billion, down 6.46% on the month and 32.92% on the year.
Coal exports to South Korea were A$1.11 billion over the same period, up 32.91% yet down 33.54% year on year.
Shipments to China's mainland were A$976 billion, down 8.87% month on month. In December 2022, no coal was shipped to China as the unofficial ban remained in effect. Exports to China's Taiwan were A$874 million, surging 108.77% from the month-ago level yet declining 9.85% from the same period last year.
For the full year of 2023, Australia's coal exports totaled A$101.82 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 28.47%. Exports to Japan, typically the largest market, fell 38.08% to A$35.34 billion.
