Japan imported 15.23 million tonnes of coal in January, a 6.6% decrease year on year, showed the preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance.
The import value amounted to 429.99 billion yen ($2.87 billion), falling 43.2% from a year ago, data showed.
In January, imports from the U.S. surged 84.8% from a year ago to 1.27 million tonnes, with the value up 53.0% to 39.03 billion yen. Russian coal receipts declined 90.7% compared with the previous year to 47,000 tonnes, which was worth 1.22 billion yen, a notable 95.2% decrease.
Japan imported 9.95 million tonnes of thermal coal during the same month, down 6.8% on the year, with import value at 243.21 billion yen, tumbling 53.6% year on year.
Thermal coal intakes from the U.S. were 665,000 tonnes, up 46.2% from a year earlier; value increased 2% on the year to 17.73 billion yen. The country imported 47,000 tonnes of thermal coal from Russia, 90.5% lower than the same month last year, with the value down 95.1% to 1.22 billion yen.
In January, Japan imported 2.50 million tonnes of coal from Asia, falling 5.1% on the year, with the value down 54.1% on the year to 55.55 billion yen. Thermal coal imports were 1.17 million tonnes, declining 13.9% from a year ago; value slumped 60.3% year on year to 23.61 billion yen.
Japan also imported 6.11 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas during the month, down 10.5% from the preceding year; value fell 28.8% on the year to 622.41 billion yen.
