Canada exported 4.09 million tonnes of coal in December 2023, surging 72.55% on the year and rising 32.48% on the month, marking the second consecutive monthly growth, according to data from Statistics Canada.
Value of the coal exports amounted to $1.35 billion in the month, soaring 75.51% year on year and up 41.42% month on month, data showed.
The top three destinations for Canadian coal exports were Japan, China's mainland and South Korea in December. Japan received 1.15 million tonnes of coal, up 14.11% on the year and 41.43% on the month. Shipments to China's mainland were 1.08 million tonnes, soaring 240.57% year on year and up 13.20% month on month.
Coal exports to South Korea stood at 941,500 tonnes in the same month, marking a substantial hike of 258.94% on the year and 60.12% on the month, data showed.
Canada's coal exports totaled 39.01 million tonnes in 2023, increasing 6.39% compared to the previous year. The value amounted to $12.28 billion, down 14.25% from a year ago.
