Power consumption in five southern China provinces posted a year-on-year growth of 7.4% last year, underscoring resilience in economic activity in the region, according to China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd.
Total electricity usage in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan provinces reached 1,583.5 TWh in 2023, showed data from the grid operator.
Guangdong, a top manufacturing powerhouse in China, saw its power use at 850.2 TWh in 2023, an 8% rise from 2022. It is the first province with power consumption exceeding the 800-TWh threshold.
The five provinces' combined power consumption growth topped the 2019 level, thanks to new drivers in the industrial sectors, especially those related to new energy and the recovery of the service sectors, said Dong Nan, a project manager with China Southern Power Grid's planning center.
Power demand rose 12%, 6.6% and 11.7% respectively for primary, secondary and tertiary industries last year in the five provinces. Electricity usage by high-tech manufacturing and equipment sectors grew 7.6% versus a 4.1% rise in 2019.
