Russian coal production totaled 438 million tonnes in 2023, falling 1.26% from 443.6 million tonnes in 2022, Russian media Tass reported, citing Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.
Last year, the country's coal exports increased 1% from the year-ago level of 210.9 million tonnes to 213 million tonnes, Novak said.
Additionally, Russian boosted its coal exports to China, India, and other countries with the BRICS bloc in 2023.
Exports to China witnessed a significant year-on-year surge of almost 52% last year, while exports to India increased by 43%. Furthermore, the share of exports to the BRICS countries as a whole grew by approximately 46%.
The Russian government, in collaboration with coal companies, is actively redirecting coal exports towards the Asia-Pacific region. This involves the development of additional coal fields in the East, as well as expanding railway and port infrastructure, according to the deputy prime minister.
Meanwhile, coal shipments would continue through Western ports to consumers in Africa, the Middle East, the Atlantic region, and Asia-Pacific countries.
