Thailand's thermal coal (including bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports in December stood at 1.56 million tonnes, marking an 8.6% year-on-year decrease but a significant 55.72% month-on-month increase, customs data showed.
This substantial rebound follows three consecutive months of decline, as indicated by customs data.
Bituminous coal imports reached 544,500 tonnes in December, rising 15.29% on the year and surging 1.2 times from the previous month. Imports from Indonesia were registered at 248,700 tonnes, down 25.58% compared with 334,200 tonnes from a year ago; shipments from Australia were 156,200 tonnes, up 13.52% from 137,600 tonnes of the preceding year.
Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 1.02 million tonnes, down 17.72% year on year but up 34.63% month on month. Indonesia remained the largest supplier at 943,400 tonnes, decreasing 3.47% from 977,300 tonnes a year earlier, while shipments from Russia were 73,000 tonnes compared with zero in the corresponding month last year.
Anthracite imports were only 533 tonnes, slumping 90.43% a year ago and 95.67% on the month. In December, the country did not import coking coal.
Over January-December 2023, Thailand's thermal coal imports accumulated 17.72 million tonnes, down 16.25% year on year. Bituminous coal imports reached 6.00 million tonnes, down 0.8% year on year; sub-bituminous coal imports declined 22.44% to 11.72 million tonnes.
The country's coal consumption amounted to 29.06 million tonnes over the first eleven months in 2023, down 11.32% on the year, official data showed. This included 18.16 million tonnes burned by power plants, down 10.29% year on year, accounting for 62.5% of the country's total coal consumption over the period.
