Global crude steel production softened in December 2023 driven by lower output from the top producer China, World Steel Association (WSA) data showed.
Crude steel of the 71 countries reporting to the WSA fell 5.3% from a year ago to 135.7 million tonnes in December, the WSA data showed.
In December, the top ten crude steel producers were China, India, Japan, the U.S., Russia, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Brazil and Iran.
China produced 67.4 million tonnes of crude steel in the month, down 14.9% year on year, while India's output rose 9.5% from a year ago to 12.1 million tonnes.
Japan reported its crude steel production at 7.0 million tonnes in December, up 1.1% on the year. The output of the U.S. increased by 7.6% on the year to 6.8 million tonnes.
During the month, crude steel output in Russia was estimated to increase 4.3% from a year ago to 6.0 million tonnes. Crude steel output of South Korea rose 2.7% from the previous year to 5.4 million tonnes, while that of Germany declined 2.3% to 2.6 million tonnes, data showed.
Crude steel production in Turkey increased 21.2% year on year to 3.2 million tonnes, and that of Brazil edged up 0.9% on the year level to 2.5 million tonnes, while that of Iran rose 12.1% on the year to 2.9 million tonnes.
Crude steel output worldwide witnessed a marginal year-on-year increase of 0.03% to 1.83 billion tonnes in the whole year of 2023.
During the period, China, India, Japan, the U.S. and Russia respectively produced 1.02 billion tonnes (+0.1% YoY), 140.2 million tonnes (+11.8% YoY), 87.0 million tonnes (-2.5% YoY), 80.7 million tonnes (+0.2 % YoY) and 75.8 million tonnes (+5.6% YoY).
Crude steel production in South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Brazil and Iran in 2023 totaled 66.7 million tonnes (+1.3% YoY), 35.4 million tonnes (-3.9% YoY), 33.7 million tonnes (-4.0% YoY), 31.9 million tonnes (-6.5% YoY) and 31.1 million tonnes (+1.8% YoY), respectively.
