Coal production in Russia's key producing area of Kuzbass declined 4.2% or 9.4 million tonnes from a year earlier to 214.2 million tonnes in 2023, according to the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass.
Coal produced from opencast mines stood at 143.1 million tonnes, down 5.7% or 8.6 million tonnes year on year, while that from underground mines fell 1.1% or 0.8 million tonnes on the year to 71.1 million tonnes.
Production of coking coal reached 68.3 million tonnes, an uptick of 0.6% or 0.4 million tonnes year on year. Thermal coal extraction volumes decreased 6.3% or 9.8 million tonnes on the year to 145.9 million tonnes.
During January-December, a total of 173.7 million tonnes of coal were delivered to end-users, down 4.0% or 7.2 million tonnes compared to the prior year.
Specifically, 113.8 million tonnes were exported, a year-on-year drop of 5.3% or 6.4 million tonnes. Russian metallurgical companies received 38.2 million tonnes of coal, up 3.5% or 1.1 million tonnes year on year, while coal shipments to local coal-fired power plants amounted to 17.3 million tonnes, down 2.8% or 0.5 million tonnes.
As of January 1, 2024, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 21.9 million tonnes, 3.5% or 0.8 million tonnes lower than the year-ago level amid international sanctions against Russia and logistical issues.
