India's power generators' thermal coal imports continued to decline for the second month in December, but still posted a year-on-year jump of over 90%, according to official data.
Power producers imported 5.42 million tonnes of thermal coal in December, soaring 93.22% from 2.8 million tonnes in the same month last year but falling 7.84% from 5.88 million tonnes in November, showed data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Among all the coal imported by power companies last month, 3.5 million tonnes were directly burned, surging 183.17% year on year but falling 18.46% month on month, and 1.92 million tonnes were blended with domestic coal, climbing 22.34% on the year and 20.87% from a month ago.
Among power utilities blending imported coal with the domestic resources, 7 state-owned power enterprises imported 1.56 million tonnes and 6 private enterprises imported 0.36 million tonnes; among those directing burning imported coal for power generation, one state-run company purchased 27,600 tonnes and 12 private ones receipted 3.47 million tonnes.
In December, Mundra of Adani Group imported most thermal coal, at 1.22 million tonnes, followed by NTPC, at 756,600 tonnes.
In the first nine months of this fiscal (April-December 2023), Indian power companies imported 46.58 million tonnes of thermal coal, up 3.92% from 44.82 million tonnes a year ago. About 29.5 million tonnes were directly burned during this period, and 16.04 million tonnes were blended with domestic supplies.
