• Guangdong becomes 1st Chinese province to exceed 800 TWh power consumption

Power consumption in China's top economic powerhouse Guangdong hit a record high of 850.2 TWh in 2023, making it the first province in China to surpass the 800-TWh mark, according to data from the provincial energy administration.

The full-year electricity demand grew 8.0% from a year earlier, the administration said. Peak grid load also set a new high of 145 GW, up around 3 GW from the previous peak.

Power consumption per capita reached 6,718 KWh in 2023, on par with the level in developed countries. Data showed the use of 1 KWh of electricity brings a corresponding 15 yuan in GDP.

Rising power consumption underlines robust economic activity. In a government work report earlier this month, Guangdong's Governor Wang Weizhong said the province's GDP exceeded 13.57 trillion yuan (about $1.9 trillion) last year, up 4.8% from 2022, making it the first province nationwide to top 13 trillion yuan. For the 35th consecutive year, Guangdong maintains its position with the largest economic scale in the country.

Manufacturing has long driven Guangdong's development. The sector saw investment grow 20.7% in 2023, a third year of double-digit increase. Output of new energy vehicles, semiconductors and optoelectronic devices rose 83.3%, 23.8% and 17.9%, respectively.

As such, manufacturing accounted for over 80% of industrial power usage and nearly 50% of total consumption in the province last year, the administration said.

Power consumption in primary, secondary and tertiary industries as well as residential sector rose 6.6%, 6.9%, 12.1% and 6.8% from a year earlier. The strong tertiary growth reflects Guangdong's vibrant consumer market, where retail sales increased 5.8% in 2023.

The province also made progress in green power trading and market-based electricity reforms last year. By the end of 2023, Guangdong's power market transactions exceeded 575 TWh, accounting for nearly 70% of the total power use.

Progress was also made in power storage. By the year-end, Guangdong's non-conventional power storage stations had an installed capacity of over 1.6 GW, soaring 125% year on year.
