Japan imported 14.41 million tonnes of coal in December, a 12% decrease year on year, showed the preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance.
The import value was 408.8 billion yen ($2.76 billion), falling 49% from a year ago, data showed.
Imports from the U.S. fell by 4.5% from a year ago to 0.93 million tonnes, with the value down 35.9% to 27.56 billion yen. Russian coal receipts declined 71.8% compared with the previous year to 167,000 tonnes, which was worth 4.85 billion yen, a notable 84.3% decrease.
In December, Japan imported 9.74 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 8.1% on the year, with import value at 241.87 billion yen, tumbling 56.7% year on year.
Thermal coal intakes from the U.S. were 456,000 tonnes, up 22% from a year earlier; value fell 44.6% on the year to 10.7 billion yen. The country imported 162,000 tonnes of thermal coal from Russia, 71.7% lower than the same month last year, with the value down 84.2% to 4.71 billion yen.
Japan imported 6.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas during the month, up 7.2% from the preceding year; value fell 19.6% on the year to 656.52 billion yen.
