China's production of coke, pig iron and finished steel products all represented year-on-year increases in 2023, while that of crude steel remained steady from the previous year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
China produced 492.60 million tonnes of coke last year, rising 3.6% year on year. The output in December stood at 41.28 million tonnes, up 4.8% on the year and 2.3% month on month. Daily coke production stood at 1.33 million tonnes in December, down 1.0% on the month, data showed.
Crude steel output was registered at 1.02 billion tonnes in 2023, unchanged year on year. The December figure came in at 67.44 million tonnes, down 14.9% year on year and 11.4% from a month ago. The daily output averaged 2.18 million tonnes last month, down 14.2% from the prior month.
The production of pig iron was 871.01 million tonnes for the full year 2023, rising 0.7% from a year ago. Production in December was registered at 60.87 million tonnes, down 11.8% on the year and 6.1% from the previous month. The average output in December was 1.96 million tonnes, down 9.2% from the month before.
Finished steel production climbed 5.2% year on year to 1.36 billion tonnes last year. Output in December stood at 108.50 million tonnes, 1.5% higher than a year earlier yet down 1.8% compared to the preceding month. This put the average daily output to 3.50 million tonnes, a 4.9% fall month on month, the NBS data showed.
