Wind and solar energy are anticipated to lead the growth of U.S. power generation over the next two years as newly-added renewable power generation capacity comes online, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
U.S. solar power generation is set to reach 286 TWh in 2025, surging 75% from 163 TWh in 2023 amid more newly-added generation capacity, which is also expected to increase 38% in 2024.
Power generation from wind is forecast to increase 11% to 476 TWh in 2025, while wind power installed capacity will remain relatively stable this year, EIA said.
Additionally, the country's coal-fired power generation may fall to 548 TWh in 2025, 18% lower than 665 TWh in 2023.
Natural gas is projected to remain the largest source of electricity generation in the U.S. in 2024 and 2025, with stable power generation at 1,700 TWh.
The U.S. power sector totally generated about 4,000 TWh of electricity throughout 2023, of which renewable energy, including wind and solar energy, accounted for 22% of the total power generation.
