Indonesia's state-owned mining group PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) saw its coal production increase 13% to 41.9 million tonnes in 2023, compared with 37.1 million tonnes a year earlier, one official of the company said.
Subsidiary PT Pamapersada Nusantara contributed 56% or 23.6 million tonnes of PTBA's output in 2023, another subsidiary PT Satria Bahana Sarana contributed 18% or 7.5 million tonnes, and a third branch PT Putra Perkasa Abadi saw its production represent 13% or 5.6 million tonnes.
There were 4.2 million tonnes or 10% of the total came from PTBA's self-mining operations, while subsidiary PT Internasional Prima Coal contributed 1.03 million tonnes.
Coal sales of the company rose to 37 million tonnes last year. Exports jumped 25% to 15.6 million tonnes, and domestic sales grew 12% to 21.4 million tonnes.
"The company continues efforts to optimize operational performance. We will maximize the potential of domestic market and tap export opportunities to several countries with promising growth prospects, including both existing and new markets," said PTBA Corporate Secretary Niko Chandra in a written statement on January 16.
PTBA's export markets diversified in 2023, tapping new countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, Brunei and Bangladesh.
Strategic projects also progressed to support earnings, including the 2x621.72 MW Tanjung Enim power plant that started commercial operations in October 2023. Development of the Tanjung Enim-Keramasan coal railway to lift its transport capacity to 20 million tonnes per year is also underway.
