India's coal imports in November 2023 increased by 11.7% from 18.75 million tonnes a year ago to 20.95 million tonnes, showed data from e-commerce platform mjunction.
Of the total imports in November, non-coking coal imports stood at 14.37 million tonnes, against 11.88 million tonnes imported in November 2022, according to mjunction. Coking coal imports rose to 4.23 million tonnes from the prior year's 3.90 million tonnes.
During April-November of FY2023-24, India's coal imports totaled 169 million tonnes, down 2.53% compared with the same period last year.
The import of non-coking coal was at 108.9 million tonnes over the first eight months of the fiscal, 6.35% lower than 116.3 million tonnes imported in the previous fiscal, while that of coking coal reached 37.97 million tonnes, up 3.63% against 36.64 million tonnes a year ago.
India's demand for imported coal gradually decreased amid ample domestic supply and a slowdown in consumption after the festive season in October 2023, mjunction MD & CEO Vinaya Varma said, expecting the demand to remain weak in the next few months.
Mjunction is India's largest B2B e-commerce platform, equally owned by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Tata Steel. The data compiled by the platform is sourced from shipping companies.
