Russia extracted 391 million tonnes of coal and lignite in the first 11 months of 2023, down 0.2% from the same period last year, according to government data.
Output of coal (anthracite, coking coal and other hard coal) fell 1.2% to 308 million tonnes, data from federal statistics service Rosstat showed.
Production of anthracite, a type of coal used for heating and generating electricity, rose 6% to 23.8 million tonnes. But output of coking coal, used in steelmaking, declined 3.5% to 93.9 million tonnes.
Mining of other hard coal grades during the January-November period slipped 0.8% to 191 million tonnes, while lignite production – used mainly for heat and power generation – edged up 3.6% to 82.5 million tonnes.
In November alone, Russia's total coal output fell 7.7% from a year earlier to 37.7 million tonnes, Rosstat said. Coking coal production declined 2.5% to 9.7 million tonnes for the month.
Output of other hard coal grades dropped 11.4% to 17.4 million tonnes, while lignite mining was down 6.7% at 8.9 million tonnes compared to November 2022.
Russia is a major global exporter of coal and natural gas and has expedited exports to China and other Asian countries after European countries imposed an embargo on Russian coal.
In January-November, China imported 94.52 million tonnes of coal from Russia, soaring 54.5% year on year, Chinese customs data showed, ranking Russia as the second largest coal supplier.
